Disagreements on the Negotiation Process of the Camp David...

Many disagreements would arise in the negotiation process of the Camp David Summit that would lead it to be unsuccessful. Disagreements such as the division of territory, the dispute over Jerusalem, Security and Refugee arrangements arose in the negotiations. However, most of the criticism for the failure at Camp David Summit was not pressed on toward the disagreement, it was pressed on Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat. In this paper, it will mention about blaming Arafat, disagreement on the â€Å"right of return†, Disagreement on Land swap, and disagreement on the proposed map as the reason for the failure at Camp David Summit. Most of the criticism for the failure at Camp David negotiations was pressed on the Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat. He was the main reason that the summit failed. In Norman G. Guilt can cause one to make poor choices that will affect both oneself and others. As it grows, it can lead to anger, aggressiveness, and fear. In Robertson Davies’ novel, Fifth Business, and William Shakespeare s play, Hamlet, guilt is a recurring theme that is a major factor in many characters’ lives. Davies and Shakespeare demonstrate this by having a character feel guilty while other characters do not. The components of guilt are portrayed through the characters’ experiences, how they cope with their consequences, and their personality changes. Guilty conscience is a theme that appears after unfortunate cases in one s life. In Fifth Business, guilt is shown through the experiences of Dunstan, as he blames himself for the cause of Paul Dempster’s premature birth. This surrounds him with the feeling of guilt, which he carries into old age. After Percy throws the snowball at Mary Dempster, it results in a cycle of guilt emerging. It began in Italy for plenty of reasons but the main factors for this happening are the geographical and sociological factors. Geographically the main reason why Italy started the Renaissance was the reminder they had from ancient Rome. One example was he Medici family who were so wealthy that they take over the city of Florence. Analysis regarding each type has been done to ascertain advantages and disadvantages regarding it. In most cases, a lower pay is accepted by the professionals as they want to gain experience and acquiring valuable knowledge. The challenges that are to be faced by professional service firm are unique due to a nature of service firm. A firm must focus on creative ways through which it can keep its staff motivated and keep staff morale high. In a competitive field, it is not possible for a service firm in the absence of talented human capital. Professional service firm provides products with no physical from as expertise, advice and other similar products (Maister, 2012). Different Forms of Ownership of a Professional Service Firm: Figure 1: Different forms of business Sole Proprietorship: A sole proprietorship is that kind of business form which is owned by a single firm. Therefore the owner is liable for unlimited liabilities. The creditors of this business form can claim from personal assets of a business owner in case he is not able to pay the debts. There is no legal distinction between the business and the owner in this form of business. A direct control on all the elements is available to the owner (Cummings and Worley, 2014). Advantages and Disadvantages: The procedure of registration of a business name in case of a sole proprietorship is quite easier in comparison to others unless the chosen name is fictitious or assumed. The owner is legally allowed for finance of such business which includes loan, debt, etc. The license for a sole proprietor enables him to hire employees and enlist the service of independent consultants. This form of business is transposed by unlimited liability with it. The total liability for all the debts and losses is suffered by the owner of the business to the extent of using personal assets for discharging the liabilities. The advantage of full control on the management and earning on the business is available in this form of business only. (Poon, 2014). Partnership It is a form of business in which two or more persons contribute their resources for doing business. The resources could be intangible as expert knowledge and experience regarding business. The partners divide the profit and loss of business in accordance with pre-determined basis. It is usually adopted by small business entities (Dunning, 2013.). General Partnership: All the partners have unlimited liability in case of a general form of partnership. The assets of the firm are owned on behalf of other partners, and each of them is jointly and severally liable. If one of the partners is apparently carrying on partnership then, all the partners can be made liable for his act with third parties (Klimkeit and Reihlen, 2016). Limited Partnership: The liability of a partner in case of limited liability is limited to fully pay up the value of share capital. The creditor cannot claim from personal assets of partners in case the firm is not able to pay off the debts. Limited liability is generally available to a group of professional only (Zikmund and et.al. 2013). Corporation A company can be said as a corporation which is a group of people authorised to act as a single entity. It is a business organisation which has a separate legal entity from its owner is a corporation. The owners have limited involvement in company operations and enjoy limited liability as well. As a shareholder of the corporation they are not personally liable for debts and obligations of the company. Registered corporations are having legal personality and are owned by the shareholders whose liability is limited to their investment. It is able to exercise right against real individuals (Goulding, 2013). It can be convicted for offences such as fraud and manslaughter but not considered as living entities in the way human are. Limited Liability Company It is a hybrid form of business which has characteristics of both corporations as well as a partnership. In this business form, the owners enjoy limited liability in the same manner as in a corporation. It may be taxed as a sole proprietor, partnership or corporation in the manner chosen by Limited Liability Company. It allows the investor to limit the liability of investor in case of business failure (Halinen, 2012.). The development of limited liability act 1855 was passed by Mr Robert Lowe, the Vice president of Board of Trade. It enables the investor to limit their liability to the amount of their investment in case of business failure. Cooperative It is a business form which can be said as a group of individuals which is operated for their mutual benefits. It can be incorporated and unincorporated both. The individuals creating the group are known as members. The disadvantage of this form of business is that the procedure of taking a decision is very long because participation of all the members is required in order to succeed (Hatten, 2015.). Democratic control is found in this kind of business form. It includes non-profit community organisations and it managed by people who use the service of the people who are part of the organisation. It can be said as a jointly owned enterprise which is engaged in distributing goods or supplying services operated by its own members for their mutual benefit (Dent and Whitehead, 2013.). Part B Research Questions in Study of Pickering The questions that Pickering was trying to address in his research to explore the relative performance of the partnership and public corporation form of business are: Figure 2: Research question of Pickering The above questions are addressed in the research of Pickering through which his whole analysis was done. The first question is related to the manner in which the revenue of a public listed company will be compared with revenue of partnership firm. The procedures which are to be applied and the relative measures which are to be taken care of while comparison of both the revenues (Edward Pickering and Edward Pickering, 2015). The second question is related to the validity of proxy measures that is revenue growth rate and revenue per person. The objective behind it was to ascertain the consideration to be taken while evaluating the business review weekly. The use of management theory was being done to ascertain the causes of lower revenue per person found in the public limited company than partnership firms (Maister, 2012). The last question was related to the importance of budget figures. The implication of business review weekly, on the estimated figures and the implication of the same on the estimations done by the company. The reason for discrepancies regarding estimation and actual figures were found through reviewing the applied methods. According to the research of Pickering, it was found in nine out of ten companies, the actual figures differed. The study contributed to information regarding the comparison of the performance of partnership firm with publicly owned companies. It was the first research regarding the analysis of new emerged accounting PLCs. It was concluded through the research that revenue per person of partnership firm was more than public companies. Part C The Research Designed by Pickering The research designed by Pickering includes the following steps in the analysis of partnership versus public ownership of accounting firm Data Sources: The first step in the research was to collect relevant data for analysis. The major of data was collected from three resources i.e. (a) Business Review Weekly (Australia), (b) the annual report of two PLCs, (c) Factiva electronic data based on newspapers and magazine. The first source can be said as the primary source of research for accounting partnership revenues and personnel numbers. The data of annual reports was used to evaluate the data collected from Business Review Weekly survey. The evaluation was necessary to check whether the data of BRW is appropriate or not. The data retrieved from the newspaper and magazine was used to explore the reason behind the low revenue per person of HR Block (Australia) and for ascertaining the reasons behind differences between budgeted revenue and subsequently reported actual revenues. Sample Used: Pickering used two similar sized public accounting companies for analysis and research. The two companies were WHK Group and Stockford Ltd. as they had similar size revenue. The strategy used by the organisation was to acquire small and medium size companies by using shares and company capital as consideration appears on a consistent basis regarding most publicly accounting firm and a characteristic of ownership form. Measures Used: As the financial information relevant for recognising partnership was not appropriately available. Hence, prior studies of PSF performance and publicly available proxy measures were used for the study. Revenue growth and productivity related measure were utilised as proxy measures for the study. Comparison of revenue of per person with the professional was used. Findings: At this stage, the firstly the proxy measures and source survey data that have been discussed for the company measures according to the available data. A no. of issues was identified through the review of BRW top 100 accounting firms including. The two samples which were chosen for the review, the calculations relating to the manner in which revenue per resources was calculated and the difference between revenue of partnership firms and public Ltd company (Pickering, 2012). The following issues were analysed during the study: The reason behind the inconsistency of survey is reporting over time. Analysis of the reason of differences between revenue numbers as reported in the annual report and the estimate available in surveys. Inconsistencies with the no. of partners or professionals while reporting the partner and professionals in a partnership firm and public organisation. As per the report of HR block report that 90% of the revenue is generated by using substantial casual labour. It was concluded that use of absolute staff on behalf of full-time employment as they may understand the performance of firms. Reporting regarding revenues for mergers with partnership was also considered for understanding the relative productivity of partnership versus publicly listed companies. Measurement Issues: The different treatment of revenues which were gained through mergers across the organisational ownership forms indicated the early negative impact on revenue per person reported by the public companies. The evaluation of accounting revenue during the period was done which revealed the seasonality of revenue in accounting year that 90% of the revenue was earned in first four months. The use of year-end personal and professional number for calculating and comparing revenue per person created many problems (Partnership Versus Public Ownership of Accounting Firms: Exploring Relative Performance, Performance Measurement and Measurement Issues, 2012). These productive numbers should be accurate to the extent possible according to the resources utilised during the period. It is having a greater impact on revenue per person on public companies rather than partnership firm. Comparison of performance of the Two PLCs: The comparison was made between WHK and Stockford group on various financial factors measured on proxy measures which were publicly available. The evaluation of revenue per employee of both the companies was done to explore the extent to which the proxy measures reflect the divergent financial performances of the entity. Revenue of one employee was not a reflection of the profitable performance of the company. As the review of BRW survey was found as early indicators that the survey numbers were erroneous. Due to difference between actual and estimated figures, the revenue per employee was revaluated using average personnel numbers (employees at the beginning of the year and employees at the end of the year were considered for it.) The results indicated that Stockford is marginally more productive than WHK. The productive measure of Stockford would have been more pronounced in case the no. of reliable professional was available as it had more non-professional employees. Part D Summary of Findings of Pickering As the public listed companies emerged with a rapid growth and became larger than the big four accounting firms in Australia. The partnership form of business has been theorised as an important attribute of the performance of professional service firm. The study regarding two Australian accounting companies with a sample of ten-second tier accounting partnerships firms was done through data publicly available. According to the analysis of Pickering, a corporate enables rapid growth than partnership through the issue of shares against acquisition in the company. Industry survey and proxy measures have been used to measure the performance of different form of ownership of firm professional service firms. It was analysed that the firm focusing on providing commoditised services are requiring a lower level of tailored solutions as they are dealing with less sophisticated clients than sample accounting partnerships. Year-end data were proved more reliable than annual averages which understate the relative productivity of rapid PLCs; in case the growth of partnership firm is low. Despite availability of advantages in partnerships, it has been observed that most of the firms have been moving to other forms of business as corporate etc. The study has also focused on the fact that whether the performance is affected due to a form of business. As the private firms do not release the information publicly, the available proxy was used to compare the profitability of public and private form of business. Ratios were used to measure in a broad way the comparison regarding industry and geographic settings of different forms of ownership. Different market segments were approached by PLCs and partnership firms for the attainment of charging out rates and cost of professional employed. The main focus of WHK and Stockfords Ltd. was on small and medium enterprise markets and individual. It was analysed that according to year-end personnel numbers the increase in revenue per person was 79% between the year 2001 and 2005 in comparison to partnership firms whose revenue per person was 24%. According to the financial measures, it was ascertained that WHK outperformed but the same was not concluded from proxy measures. Therefore it was concluded that revenue per person was not a reflection of profitability performance of the two samples which were taken. The reason behind the difference in the percentage of revenue per person was a substantial drop in profit of partnership firm in a year or revenue per person is not an appropriate measure for comparing the profitability performance. The study concluded that the public owned company attain higher growth rate in comparison with partnership firms but on the other hand lower level of productivity revenue (revenue per person) was attained by public companies in comparison to partnership firms. The difference in financial performance of two similar companies in the same market and geographical conditions can be only because of different strategies, governance and impact of professional behaviour and structure of ownership. After analysis of data of 2002, it can be said that WHKs related employee cost was 64.7%, and the percentage of Stockford is 78.5% per person. The difference in cost resources is an important factor in understanding in comparing the profitability of different forms of business. As the research was of exploratory nature, the sample of two PLCs and ten firms is too small for statistical performances. Conclusion It can be concluded from the above study that the all the analysis was done on the basis of publicly available data. The importance of revenue per person and productivity level has been discussed in the report. Various bases on which comparison of profitable or financial performance between PLCs and partnership firms have been presented in the report. The above report concludes that revenue per person is not a correct base to compare the profitability performance of two entities. Effect of Buffers on pH Levels   Abstract A buffer is a solution that helps keep the pH of other solutions at a steady level with the addition of limited acids or bases. The purpose if this experiment was to figure out how to create an optimal buffer and to determine how effective buffers are at stabilizing the pH of different solutions. An optimal buffer was made after calculating the [H+] levels and determining how much weak acid and conjugate base was needed to test when added to beakers containing either acidic or basic solutions. The results found that the buffers helped get the solutions closer to a neutral pH and were found to be effective pH stabilizers. Introduction In the real world, pH levels are important in the function of many life processes. For instance, the average human bodys average pH level is approximately 7.4, and if there are any changes to that pH at all, no matter how small it may be, one would eventually get sick and die, since the human body is not meant to handle such a large fluctuation of pH levels. These pH levels are the measurement of Hydronium ions (H3O+) in a solution and are measured on a pH scale going from 0 to 14, with 7 being neutral, anything less than 7 would be considered acidic, and anything greater than 7 would be considered basic. One might wonder how a persons pH levels do not change so easily, and the answer is because of a solution is known as a buffer. The main function of buffers is to help keep pH levels steady when a certain amount of acids or bases are introduced in a solution. Once a buffer has reached its limit, the solution will exponentially increase or decrease, depending on if a base or an acid were used, respectively. In the graph shown, it depicts how the buffer helps to keep the pH levels steady for as long as it can, but when too much base is added, the buffer will reach its capacity and the excess base will cause the pH to rise quickly, while an addition of excess base will cause the pH to drop quickly. Buffers are made from weak acids or bases paired with their conjugate bases or acids, and weak acids and bases are used because they do not disassociate fully in a solution and the hydrogen or hydroxide (OH) ions will mostly stay connected to the other molecules, unlike strong acids or bases that will completely dissociate into either the hydrogen or hydroxide ions. A good weak acid to use is acetic acid (CH3COOH), which is commonly found in vinegar. Another thing to keep in mind is how this relates to Le Chateliers Principle, which means for acetic acid that if a base were added, the equilibrium would shift to the right to want to produce more hydrogen ions, and if an acid were added, the equilibrium would shift left to want to produce more conjugate base. Lastly, a good buffer should have equal amounts of a weak acid and a conjugate base, which is done experimentally. Materials and Methods Materials used: Three 250 mL beakers One 50 mL graduated cylinder One 10 mL graduated cylinder An unknown weak acid Ka=[CH3COO]/[CH3COOH] pH=-log[H+] [H+] =10-pH Ka=([H+]*[WA])/[HWA] Procedures: Obtain three 250 mL beakers, and a 10 mL and a 50 mL graduated cylinder. To the first beaker, add a pipette bulb of the unknown weak acid and 110 mL of distilled water. Measure 50 mL of the acid solution and add it to each of the remaining two beakers, and then wash it out and keep the beaker. Label one beaker [HWA], or acid, and the other [WA], or conjugate base. Fill burette with an NaOH solution and add two to three drops of phenolphthalein indicator to [WA] beaker and titrate solution using base in burette to indicator end point, which will be signaled through a pink color change, so HWA will be converted to WA. Determine the volume of base added to [WA] beaker during titration and add that same volume of water to the [HWA] beaker so that the [HWA]=[WA]. Make an optimal buffer by mixing 20 mL of [HWA] and 20 mL [WA] in the third beaker. Prepare pH meter by standardizing it with standard solutions of pH 4 and 7. Take pH of optimal buffer and calculate [H+] from pH reading. Determine Ka value and show calculations to TA, and a new buffer will be assigned to be made. Using assigned buffer, determine [H+]. Use Ka equation to determine volume of conjugate base needed when 10 mL of acid is used, and use Ka value from step 10, [H+] value from pH, and 10 mL to replace [CH3COOH] to find volume of [CH3COO] needed. Make a new buffer using these volumes in a clean beaker, then take the pH of the new buffer to see how close the found pH is to the assigned value. Get two 50 mL beakers and add 5 mL of new buffer to one beaker and 5 mL of distilled water to the other. Add five drops of NaOH to each beaker and read pH for each one and record both. Thoroughly wash out small beakers and repeat step 13. Add five drops of HCl to each beaker and read pH for each one and record both. Clean up and turn in data sheet. Results: Data and Calculations 0.10 M NaOH added to 50 mL of acid mixture: Initial Burette Reading mL Final Burette Reading 34.7 mL Volume of NaOH Added 16.3 mL pH of Optimal Buffer 4.7 Ka of Unknown Weak Acid 2*10-5 10-4.7=2*10-5=Ka Assigned pH of new buffer to make: 4.85 New Buffer Data: [H+] needed 1.41*10-5 Ka: [H+]=(Ka/[H+]) 1.42 [A]:[HWA]=(Ka/[H+]) 1.42 Volume of A 14.2 mL Volume of HWA 10 mL pH of New Buffer 4.84 (2*10-5)/(1.41*10-5)=1.42 Test of New Buffer: pH of Distilled Water with Acid 2.88 pH of New Buffer with Acid 4.5 pH of Distilled Water with Base 10.9 pH of New Buffer with Base 5.18 Discussion/Conclusion In conclusion, the results determined that the buffer was effective at stabilizing the pH of both solutions containing distilled water and either an acid or a base added. The results also showed that the new buffer pH was very similar to the assigned pH, indicating that the overall reactions in this experiment were precise and accurate. A buffer is a solution that controls the pH of other solutions it is added in from fluctuating, and it is made by mixing equal amounts of a weak acid with its conjugate base. The reason it needs to be a weak acid because it will not dissociate fully when added in a solution, so the hydrogen ions will mostly be intact and not free floating. This would be able to help the pH of the solution in which it is added stable when combined with the conjugate base that is formed when the hydrogen ion dissociates from its original molecule from which it was connected.   The Ka of the weak acid used in this experiment was determined after titrating NaOH to the acid mixture until the indicator turned light pink and then taking the pH reading of the titrated solution and using the 10-pH formula to find [H+] which equaled the Ka of the weak acid. The new buffer was then made when the newly assigned pH was taken, the [H+] needed to achieve that new pH was determined, the Ka value by the needed [H+] value was divided, and the decimal for the product was moved one decimal place to the right, since the amount of HWA needed was 10 mL, and the pH was then determined from that solution, and it matched very closely to the assigned pH. Lastly, although not major, there was one experimental error that occurred when the solutions prepared in the first part of the lab were accidentally disposed of early, but a new solution was made again which was the same pH of the previous solution, so that error did not affect the overall results of this experiment.

Positivity in Your Job Search Will Get You Farther Than You Think Perhaps you’ll identify with me when I say I can’t stand hearing anyone complain- except for myself. That said, even my tolerance for my own complaints has plummeted in the last few years. As soon as I start complaining in a conversation, I know I’ve made a big mistake. I leave the interaction feeling horrible, sure the person I was talking to will never want to talk to me again. Last week, while reading AJ Jacobs’ The Guinea Pig Diaries, I learned something new about the impact of my complaining or criticizing. I was shocked to discover a phenomenon that makes people really and truly think poorly of me when I speak poorly of others. You Are What You Speak It turns out that not only are complainers seen as negative, but that the characteristics they attribute to others are automatically attributed to them by their listener. So if I call someone racist, the person listening to me will unconsciously dub me a racist. If I call someone stupid or incompetent, I will be seen as stupid and incompetent. In contrast, if I talk about how nice, helpful, talented, and all-around awesome people are, listeners will associate all those positive characteristics with me. Since learning about this mind mechanism, I’ve become much more conscious of my speech. I now understand that by using negative language, I’m risking not only that people will have a generally negative feeling about me, but also that they will make specific negative judgments that I certainly don’t want attached to me. By using more positive words, I can consciously shape the way people think of me. I recently had a conversation with one of my executive clients, who had been given the runaround, then turned away by another resume writing company, because they don’t work with â€Å"Muslim terrorists.† I can assure you this man is one of the most generous and kind people you would ever want to meet. He did not have anything negative to say about that company, and he chose not to report them to the BBB or even tell LinkedIn to investigate their profiles. He figured he could stay positive, and let them dig their own graves. If they are putting out that negativity into the world, they themselves will be seen as negative. Positive Language in Your Job Search Also last week, I saw a resume that spoke of bringing together often â€Å"fractious† staff. The word â€Å"fractious† appeared twice in one resume! Guess what anyone reading that resume will think of the applicant? Yep†¦ that he himself is the fractious one. His final resume will not include that word if I have anything to say about it. Instead, he will say that he fostered teamwork in a diverse, multi-cultural environment. That sounds much better doesn’t it? While it’s important in many cases to provide a â€Å"before and after† picture to highlight your accomplishments, putting people down will never serve you. I still remember an interview I gave when I was a manager in a legal department. The interviewee had an impressive background, but in her interview, almost every word out of her mouth was about the negative aspects of her prior employment. Needless to say, she didn’t get hired. If she had been more positive, we would have considered her. In Business Insider’s 29 Words You Should Never Say in a Job Interview, here’s what author Jacquelyn Smith says about some clearly damaging words you must avoid: Terrible, horrible, awful, hate, etc. You shouldnt use negative language during your interview - especially when youre talking about your current or previous boss or employer. Even if the interviewer invites you to,  dont, Hoover says. Its not classy, and it  will make you sound bitter and petty. It also shows that you could bad-mouth any boss or company in the future - and it could even be a test to see if you will say anything disparaging. That’s great advice, and now I understand that if you use words like these, you will actually be perceived as terrible, horrible, awful, hating person. While Ms. Smith doesnt suggest positive words to emphasize, I would offer â€Å"exciting,† â€Å"growthful,† â€Å"positive,† â€Å"amazing,† â€Å"collaborative,† â€Å"talented,† â€Å"friendly,† â€Å"smart,† â€Å"brilliant,† â€Å"creative,† â€Å"innovative,† and other adjectives that paint others – and, by default, you – in a favorable light. The Challenge, If You Choose to Accept It Eliminating negative language is not as easy as it sounds. I caught myself today talking to a very helpful man at the airport about how unhelpful a customer service person had been because she gave me directions to the hotel shuttle that didn’t help. â€Å"Wow,† I thought, â€Å"I’m addicted to complaining!† There was clearly no useful purpose in sharing that information with him, and now he probably thinks I’m negative and unhelpful. I sure have a lot more work to do on this positivity project! I’m grateful to have people like my client and others who inspire me to live and work â€Å"above the line.† They keep me honest and, well, I think they’re fantastic and awesome! By 1924, there were several million KKK members in their national membership.2 These KKK members terrorized those who were different from them. Wages were cut dramatically while the prices of items only grew. U.S. Steel cut wages back to the prewar rate of 30 cents an hour. This wage provided barely enough to survive. A movement to wear overalls spread over the South in hope of cutting clothing prices. By 1929, 60% of the people had incomes at or below the level necessary to survive. Forty-nine percent of the people who were hit by the agricultural depression lived in rural areas.3 However, America was not the only country headed towards a great depression. In England, there was a severe depression that left 18% of the people to go unemployed.4 The Weimer Republic of Germany was also having an economic crisis. They said burning money was cheaper then buying firewood. In Italy, political strife led to the ascendancy of the brutal fascist Benito Mussolini. In France, the value of the franc plummeted. Christian Church Art Architecture - Essay Example In fact, this is the building that I will attempt to effectively 'dissect' in order to ascertain to what extent it has been constructed from an amalgam of various styles as well as attempting to identify the particular styles in question. First, let us look at the details behind the design and construction of this building. The actual construction of this building began in 1851 and reached its completion some six years later. However, due to extensive damage, the building was reconstructed in the 1920s although the reconstruction remained true to the original design. The building was designed and built under the direction of Fr. John Cambiaso who was a Jesuit originating from Lyon in France. We learn that Fr. Cambiaso actually learnt the practice of architectural design during his stay in Spain and this gives us some clues behind his particular use of certain elements within the design. Because as we see from our first view of the church from the outside (fig. 1) it distinctly remind s us of those buildings that were produced under the Islamic and Moorish influences that were so predominant in the seventh and eighth centuries, especially in countries such as Persia, Egypt and Spain.(1) 2 Fig. 1 As we can see, the Moorish elements of this building are typical of how the designers let their imaginations play a little with both patterns and forms to produce designs that were almost dreamlike. However, another building that comes to mind here (especially with regards to the second level arches) is the Palace of the Doges of Venice that was built in the 14th century. It is from this that we learn that our particular church was in reality designed in a Venetian Gothic Style. It is then that we begin to notice the elements of this building that are so essential to the Gothic. In the words of the art historian Heinrich Wolfflin, we notice how in the gothic "†¦the vertical movement streams upwards without check and dissolves playfully at the top" (Wolfflin 60). We k now that the Gothic architects were particularly fond of intricate ornament and tracery and here we see examples of how, again in the words of Wolfflin, "[The Gothic] developed in the direction of ever slimmer and more pointed shapes, to a point of extreme exaggeration" (75). In fact, the Venetian Gothic Style was effectively revived during the 19th century. This revival was mainly down to the work of the British architectural critic, John Ruskin especially his book entitled The Stones of Venice (2). It was Ruskin who spoke of the lightness and soaring spaces of this style and, once inside the church, this is the first thing that strikes us. In fact, the massive height of the nave although typical of most churches in New Orleans is particularly stunning (fig 2) 3 Fig 2 The nave is lined with intricate arcading and 'triforium' windows so typically expansive enough for Gothic taste to permit huge amounts of natural light to swarm the interior. The arcading is layered on intricately de signed columns that incorporate the geometric designs so familiar within the Moorish style. There is also what is known as a Solomonic column (fig 3) that features a kind of corkscrew design. This style of column actually dates back to ancient Jerusalem and has become popularly used since because of its symbolic reference to the gates of paradise. Declaration of Independence vs. Gettysburg Address Essay The Declaration of Independence and the Gettysburg Address are glimpses into America’s history. They were written in two different time periods: America’s first years in 1776 and the Civil War in the 1800’s. Despite their time gap, they are similar because they both explain to the reader what is going on during their time period. However, the country was going through different events and so these two documents are diverse as well. Both The Declaration of Independence and the Gettysburg Address were written during times of turmoil and change for the country. Both occurred during a time of war in which America was fighting for liberty and freedoms. During the Revolutionary War, the United States was trying to become â€Å"a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal†. It was battling for independence and the right to govern them in a way that would actually benefit the country and its people. So in 1776 when The Declaration of Independence was written, the country fought for freedom for themselves. During the Civil War, the country was divided in two, one half of the country fighting against the other half. They were independent as a country, but this time they were fighting for freedom for others—the African-American slaves. In a way though, America was fighting for equality both times. The first was equal treatment for the British citizens and American colonists. The second time, the country was fighting for equal treatment for all men, no matter what skin color. Both these eras were a time of testing for the United States. The Revolutionary War period determined whether the states would actually be able to achieve independence. The Civil War was a test to see if America would be able to keep that independence. President Abraham Lincoln spoke about this in his Gettysburg Address: â€Å"we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure†. These two documents are similar because they are both written about a time of battle which tested America’s strength. The Declaration of Independence and Gettysburg Address are different for several reasons. For one, The Declaration of Independence is a statement while the Gettysburg Address was a speech. The authors were also targeting different audiences. The Declaration of Independence was written mostly for themselves, but also for the British government. The Declaration stated the sentiments of the thirteen colonies and â€Å"the causes which impel them to the separation†. This clarified where the people stood in regards to their independence. This was for the benefit and organization of the country, but also for the British to know that the Americans were not giving up on independence. The Gettysburg Address was a speech given by President Abraham Lincoln to the people of America. The Civil War was not an international conflict, but rather one inside the nation. The speech was aimed for encouraging and touching the hearts of the American people. Lincoln wanted them to not give up on the cause they were fighting for, but â€Å"to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us†. In the Gettysburg Address, the president was appealing to the people’s emotions in order to boost their war effort. This is another difference it has with The Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence appealed to the British government about rights that the people ought to have. The tone of the Gettysburg Address is more personal since Lincoln’s goal was to encourage the people. Lincoln achieves a personal tone by speaking about the brave men who fought in the recent battle. The Declaration of Independence, on the other hand, was written as a political document with a formal tone. It lists the main reasons why the people were demanding independence, which were mostly due to Great Britain’s offenses against the colonies. The Declaration of Independence and the Gettysburg Address are very distinct because they were appealing to different audiences and written in different tones. The Declaration of Independence and the Gettysburg Address have several similarities and differences. Although they were written during different time periods, they both fight for liberty, freedom, and equality. However, the two documents, one a statement and the other a letter, were targeted at different audiences. This results in differing tones.
